Now which type of game do I play?
Once you have learned how to play Texas Holdem Poker(or the other styles) and deposited money you must choose a variant. The three major variants are Cash, Multi-table Tournaments, and Sit n Go Tournaments. Picking the one that fits your goals and playing style will be very important in your quest to produce a profit. Each style has its own advantages and disadvantages. So lets break down all three to help you pick.
Sit n Go Tournaments
Sit n Go Tournaments are by far my personal favorite and the style I'm best at. Most typical Sit n Go's are 9 or 10 handed. Meaning that the table has 9 or 10 players during each match. The pay out for each match pays out to third place. There are many sub-variants like, bounty, double or nothing, or payout alterations(top 5 places paid). Each match typically lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the blind speed(regular, turbo, super turbo)
Multi-Table Tournaments
Multi-table tournaments are exactly how they sound. Most casinos and online poker rooms run daily multi-table(MTT) tournaments every day and night. There will typically be anywhere from 30-1000 players(or even more) in any given Tournament. The odds of winning are slim but the payout will be huge if you make it in the top five. Shoot for making it into the money at the very least.
Cash Games or Ring Games
Cash games are also exactly as they sound. Instead of paying an entry fee to a tournament you exchange money for chips. Each table will have a maximum and a minimum that can be brought to the table. Example. $1/$2 will often have a maximum of 200$ and a minimum of around 60$. Each hand can be wagered a certain am mount of cash. This style is great for winning quickly and also losing your bank roll very quickly.
Conclusion
So there you have it. The three major variations of poker play. Chose your style and focus on it until you can win consistently before you move on to the next style. I know people that chose to focus all of their study on Cash. I personally love the Sit and Go format. I study only SNG. However you can play a few of each before you decide which is best for you! Good luck!
